Step 1: Place the Wii U and connect it to your TV
- Connect the Wii U GamePad to its AC adapter and allow it to charge.
- Find an area to set up the Wii U console.
- While the Wii U GamePad is charging, connect the Wii U console to its AC adapter.
- Connect the Wii U console to your television.
- Power on the television and Wii U console.
- Find the correct input channel for the Wii U console.
Step 2: Sync the Wii U GamePad
- Power on the Wii U GamePad.
- Press the SYNC button on the front of the Wii U console.
- Use the Wii U GamePad stylus to press the SYNC button on the back of the Wii U GamePad.
- On the Wii U GamePad, tap the symbols in the order they appear on the television from left to right.
- Tap the Wii U GamePad screen to continue.
Step 3: Select the system language and country of residence
- Select the correct language and tap OK to confirm, or tap Back to select a different language.
- Tap OK.
- Select your country of residence.
- Tap Next, or tap Back to change the setting.
Step 4: Set the date and time
- Set the date by tapping the up and down arrows, then tap Next.
- Set the time by tapping the up and down arrows, then tap Confirm.
- Tap OK.
Step 5: Configure TV settings, TV Remote, and Sensor Bar
- The Wii U will automatically detect the best settings for your television.
- To change the settings, tap TV Display Settings.
- Tap Next.
- Tap Set up to set up the TV Remote Function.
- To skip this feature, tap Not Now.
- Tap TV Remote to set up the feature for your television only.
- Tap Other Remote to set up the feature for your set-top box and television.
- Tap OK to continue.
- If you are using a Sensor Bar, connect it and tap Set Up.
- Select where the Sensor Bar is currently positioned, then tap OK.
- Tap Next.
Step 6: Accept the EULA, connect to the Internet, and update the system
- Read the EULA and tap Agree.
- You can change the language by tapping Language.
- Tap OK to set up an Internet connection.
- The connection type will default to Wi-Fi, but can be changed by tapping Connection types.
- Tap OK after your connection test has completed.
- If your connection test was not successful, you can configure the Internet settings from System Settings on the Wii U Menu once you have finished.
- Tap OK.
- Tap Update to install the latest system update, or tap Cancel to skip installing the system update.
- If you do not update the system, you will not be able to link a Nintendo Network Account.
Step 7: Create a new user or link a Nintendo Network Account
- Select Add New User to create a new user. If you did not update your system, you will automatically be brought to this screen.
- If you already have an existing Nintendo Network ID, you can link it to the user account.
- Create your Mii.
- To link a Nintendo Network ID, click Link a Nintendo Network ID. Otherwise, choose Later.
- Tap Next to confirm the new user.
Note: As of April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that used online communication ended for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family software.
As of March 27, 2023, it was no longer possible to make purchases in Nintendo eShop for the Wii U system and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. It was also no longer possible to download free content, including game demos. For the foreseeable future after March 27, 2023, it was still possible to redownload games and DLC and receive software updates on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems. Step 8: Set up Parental Controls and finish
- Set up Parental Controls, or tap Wii U Menu.
- You may find the information on what you can block with Parental Controls helpful.
- You can now use the Wii U console.
- If you own a Wii and would like to transfer its content to your Wii U, you may find information on transferring content helpful.

Do not allow the battery to come into contact with fire or subject it to extreme temperatures such as in direct sunlight, in a vehicle exposed to the sun or near a heat source. Additional Wii U Safety Warnings
Warning: Repetitive Motion Injuries and Eyestrain
- Take a 10 to 15 minute break every hour, even if you do not think you need it.
- Stop playing and rest if your hands, wrists, arms, eyes, muscles, joints, or skin become tired, sore, numb, tingly, stiff, or uncomfortable.
- If symptoms or discomfort continue during or after play, stop playing and see a doctor.
Caution: Motion Sickness
- Stop playing and rest if you feel dizzy or nauseous while playing.
- Do not drive or do another demanding activity until you feel better.
Warning: Electric Shock and Power Supply Safety
- Use a thoroughly tested, safe AC power adapter for the Wii U console and Wii U GamePad.
- Do not use the AC adapter if it is damaged, has exposed wires, or shows signs of overheating.
- Keep the AC adapter, plugs, and power connections dry, and do not handle them with wet hands.
- Unplug the system during lightning storms or when it will not be used for an extended time.
